Master Thesis


In the spring/summer semester (FSS 2016), the Chair of International Finance will offer 6 master thesis topics in the area of "Empirical Finance" for master students at the University of Mannheim. You can find details on the specific paper topics Initiates file downloadhere.


You must have successfully completed a seminar from the Finance Area (Albrecht, Maug, Niessen-Ruenzi, Ruenzi, Terberger, Theissen, or Weber) in order to participate. Some knowledge of statistics and econometrics is useful and participants should be motivated to undertake empirical work. In particular, having experience from an empirical seminar thesis is useful.


You should write your thesis in English.

Assignment of Topics

The assignment of master thesis topics is carried out in cooperation with the Chair of Corporate Finance (Prof. Maug), the Chair of Corporate Governance (Prof. Niessen-Ruenzi), the Chair of Finance (Prof. Theissen), the Chair of Finance and Banking (Prof. Weber), and the Chair of Risk Theory, Portfolio Management, and Insurance (Prof. Albrecht). The assignment is based on the grade in one of the seminars of the Finance Area and your priority list from the master thesis application form.

  • Wednesday, March 16 - Tuesday, March 22, 2016: Registration period (Ask your supervisor to fill out the registration form.)
  • Tuesday, March 22, 2016: Starting date
  • Tuesday, May 10, 2016: First colloquium (L9, 1-2, Room 210 (2nd floor))
  • Tuesday, June 21, 2016: Second colloquium (L9, 1-2, Room 409 (4th floor))
  • Friday, July 22, 2016, 12pm (noon): Submission of master thesis (hardcopy and electronic version, which should include the data and do-files necessary to replicate your work)

Please note that the timeline is common within the Finance Area and thus cannot be changed individually, e.g., due to time spent abroad or internships.


The Chair of International Finance will hold two block sessions in which candidates will present their topics. These block sessions are an integral component of the supervision at our chair. They should be considered as a chance to get an early feedback on the thesis. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to discuss problems and in particular to receive guidance. The participation in the block sessions is obligatory for all candidates.

Stata Tutorials

If you apply for a master thesis at our chair and your knowledge about STATA and financial databases is limited, you should attend the tutorials that provide you with basic knowledge about programming with STATA and the use of financial databases. We will offer joint tutorials with the Chair of Corporate Finance (Prof. Maug) and the Chair of Finance (Prof. Theissen).
